trying this new thing where I put a quick weekly highlight reel before my thursday articles
The Front Bottoms announced a new tour! Unfortunately for me, 0 Colorado dates. Fortunately for the city of Anaheim, Ca, they opted to spend two (2) nights there.
I’ve been on a massive focaccia kick lately. I use this recipe for the base and just use whatever toppers are available at the farmers’ market.
This is being posted while I visit my hometown for a few days, and as I’m writing this (before I actually leave to visit) my stomach is growling just thinking about my favorite Mexican restaurant.
I saw Tuesday last week, and it serves as a necessary periodic reminder that A24 is capable of putting out bad material. Still feel the need to dickride them? Barely Lethal is also a reminder on that end. (0 shade, I love bad movies and I love most of what A24 puts out)
All the fashion blogs I follow on here have given me a crippling eBay addiction, but at least I scored this Marimekko bag out of it.
Keeping on this week’s film theme—one thing about me, I love shitty movies. There is nothing I get more pleasure from than getting absolutely blasted and watching the worst movie I can find. I even make all my dating app boys watch Evil Bong as a sort of rite of passage into my bedroom, it’s past the point of being a bit and is almost compulsive at this point. As a certified lover of terrible films, I recognize Tommy Wiseau’s The Room as the cinematic masterpiece it is.
From my very first showing, Lisa has always stood out to me as yet another woman unfairly vilified for the simple act of securing a good future for herself. She knew what she wanted and went for it and said “fuck you” to anyone who tried to stop her. How are so many people who claim to support women’s wrongs so quick to judge her for this?
What was Lisa’s crime at the end of the day anyway? Being an It Girl? Finding a rich man and making him fall in love with her? Gaslighting the shit out of that man? God forbid a woman have hobbies. Y’all Lana Del Rey girlies would make her your leader if you knew what she stood for!
She was a fashion icon. You could spend years curating a whole Pinterest board on her aesthetic and still never quite put your finger on it. Like it or not, she was the moment, and you can’t be the moment without stepping on a few toes.
Men watch movies about evil men and say “Wow! He’s so me!” and everyone is okay with that. Men resonating with Patrick Bateman is just a meme at this point. Why is it that when a woman has someone to look up to who is simply morally gray, everyone riots? Why can men’s role models be abhorrent stains on society as a whole but women’s can’t even be just a little mean?
You can’t cry “Eat the rich!” and “I support women’s wrongs!” just to sympathize with Johnny and consider Lisa to be irredeemably evil. The criticism Lisa faces from audiences is inherently pro-capitalist and misogynistic in nature.
In an era where women everywhere are looking at Pearl/Maxine and saying she was right all along, we need to start giving our girl Lisa the flowers she deserves for opening the door for this sort of representation. In an era where women prioritize a sprinkle-sprinkle lifestyle, we owe Lisa an apology and we need to admit that maybe she had a point.
“But Eevee she was a bad person—” Don’t take this too serious, I’m just here to be silly and have a good time.
Thank you for reading! I’ll see y’all next Tuesday :3
